Thank you to Mark Coulter from the City of Campbell River who used the GFOABC Forum to ask for help comparing property taxes across BC, breaking down how other local governments charge for services like water, sewer and garbage.

To get the answer, CivicInfo BC and the GFOABC conducted a very short survey, and 50% of the province’s local governments replied.

The results for all local governments combined are as follows:

Quarterlyquestion ImagetableAdditional Analysis Using CivicStats.ca
We took the data generated from the responses and compared it to the datasets available on CivicStats.ca. We found that when communities offer green waste collection, those with higher populations were most likely to bill for the service separately, and communities with smaller populations (less than 10,000) were more likely to include the cost in the general levy.

You can perform your own analysis
CivicStats.ca is a platform, offered free to local government employees across BC as part of their CivicInfo BC membership, that allows users to compare over 6 million unique datapoints.

Thank you to all who participated in this questionnaire. The online Forum is a great place to continue the conversation.

If you have a topic for a future quarterly question please contact the office at office@gfoabc.ca or 250-382-6871.
